New Art / New Music is a unique experience at Rice University where students from the Shepherd School of Music perform works of the 20th and 21st centuries in the intimate setting of the Rice Gallery. With a special interest in premiering works from Shepherd School composition students, the room-sized art at the Rice Gallery serves as inspiration for music that is then performed alongside the artwork.
In October of 2010, Max Pipinich created NANM out of a love for cross-medium collaborations. He hoped that having a concert in an art gallery would pull in a varied audience where people interested in the art would gain some insight into the music and music-lovers would gain insight into the art. The result was a concert series that has continued to grow through the efforts of Max as well as Rachel Sandman, Natalie Parker and Dawson White.
